Miss the Communication Essay - 629 Words

Communication: the words we speak, see, and create to inform others of our ideas and intentions. The written word is but one facet of this action, and one, that if improperly used, can lead to various problems of miscommunication. What we speak can be forgotten, what we see or read can be misunderstood, but what we write and show the world may never be fully erased. What and how we write is especially important in today’s world as more and more communication takes place on the internet. While many may enable speech by way of microphones connected to their computers, the very staple of online communication remains writing. While not only important in cyberspace, good writing skills are an essential attribute on the job, trying to†¦show more content†¦Imagine trying to decipher an email in your native language with the same problem. Trying to figure out just what point the sender is trying to make leads to frustration, and likely a diversion to another form of com munication to rectify the situation. While etiquette is another subject, just getting sentences properly constructed and with correct punctuation is the basis of successful online communication, and communication overall. Not to mention, a person that cannot properly write or type out their intentions could be viewed as an individual with lower intelligence, or just lazy, and neither is an attribute anyone wishes to be associated with. What about written communication on the job? Some jobs may require a certain amount of writing as the actual task, but most of us just tend to send memos or jot down quick notes for our coworkers. Poor writing skills on even a short memo could lead to certain tasks not being completed, or finished improperly. A humorous example I came across online involves a memo originating from a CEO about letting employees go outside to view an eclipse, then passed along several other memos to end up with information that the CEO would be disappearing (Fun In Life 2008). Like a grown-up version of the Telephone game, each time the memo was rewritten, it contained less and less of the pertinent words and ideas needed to properly convey the message.
